Pinoy Goods Now Available In 60 Woolie Supermarkets in Australia

The Philippine Trade and Investment Center (PTIC) in Sydney announced that various Filipino food products are now available in 60 major retail stores in Australia on – demand not only from the Filipino populations but also from increasingly adventurous Australian mainstream consumers.

PTIC Sydney announced that the giant retailer Woolworths is expanding the number of retail outlets where Filipino items can be found in its foreign food section in response to the increasingly diverse society and increasingly adventurous Australian mainstream customers.

These Filipino food items include vinegar sauces and mixtures, soy sauce, salty chips, cookies, rice noodles, and other Pinoy favorites.

From just a few stores in 2019, coverage has now grown to 60 stores across Australia, with many more stores to be added in the next 3-5 years, with more Filipinos and Australians searching for Filipino items to enjoy.

Alma Argayoso, the trade representative of the Philippines to Australia, said that the Department of Trade and Industry aims to widen the market and make Filipino goods more affordable not only to Filipinos but also to Australian buyers.

“The Filipino mom-and-pop shops will remain as they have unique offerings, style, and culture catering to the Filipino community, but if we are aiming to target the majority of Australians, we have to be in the mainstream stores,” Argayoso added.

The demand for Filipino items increased during the pandemic, when lock-down measures were enforced, as the Filipino-Australians became more daring kitchen dishes and tried out new recipes, according to DHN Import/Export Trading, a business that pioneered the stocking of Filipino staple pantry goods in Woolworths.

“We predict that the demand for Filipino products will continue to increase even beyond the pandemic. There is an increasing awareness now about Filipino cuisine and the availability of products and ingredients in the mainstream supermarkets will further drive demand,” Bob Harris, the marketing consultant for DHN Trading, said in a recent interview.

Aside from traditional Filipino favorites, other Philippine-made products such as canned tropical fruit, fruit juices, banana chips, virgin coconut oil, coconut water, coconut flour and other coconut products are also available in Woolworths.
