Good news for OFWs! To provide more assistance to the Overseas Filipino Workers, the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) Region 12 announced that they have scholarship slots for their children and siblings. The Education for Development Scholarship Program (EDSP) is a continuing scholarship program of the agency for incoming college students who are dependents of active OFWs in the region. The program started in 2004.
How does it work?
Each scholar would receive P60,000 per year or P30,000 per semester as financial assistance to enroll in a 4 or 5-year baccalaureate course in CHED-accredited university or college in the said region. Even if the tuition fee is less than the allocated budget, the scholars will still get the whole amount. However, those who are interested must apply early or even before their high school commencement exercises.
What are the essential requirements?
Qualified applicants are children or brother/sister of an unmarried OWWA member. They must be a Filipino citizen, below 21 years old, and do not have earned units in any undergraduate/post-secondary courses. They should bring the following OWWA requirements to the regional office for processing purposes:

Certification that shows the applicant belongs to the upper 20% of the graduating class

Other scholarship programs for OFWs
Furthermore, OFWs who are not more than 45 years old and want to finish their education, OWWA has the Congressional Migrant Workers Scholarship Program (CMWSP). It is open for active and inactive OFWs who like to pursue science and technology courses. To become a scholar, they need to pass a test conducted by the Department of Science and Technology (DOST).
The agency also encouraged the widows/widowers of OFWs to avail of their social benefits that assist the dependents such as scholarship of one child/sibling and livelihood package.
Interested applicants may visit OFW desk in the municipalities of the region and the OWWA Regional Office in Koronadal or text/call 09560912837 for more details.
