Aljun Andrade, an Overseas Filipino Worker waiter in Riyadh, is in comatose at the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of Saudi German Hospital after being mugged by Arab men on Sunday, July 1, 2018.
Despite being known for strong family ties, many Filipinos go abroad and endure being away from their loved-ones to find greener pastures, in hopes that their sacrifice would translate to provide family’s needs. But what they hoped for is not definite.
On the evening of July 1, Saudi time, Andrade went to a money transfer station to send some amount for his sibling in Iloilo, who is critical due to an accident.
On his way home, a group of Arab men called “Bado” attacked him; they tried to take his wallet and cellphone. The victim fought back, but he was struck up with a steel pipe on his head, leaving him bleeding and unconscious. He was only rushed to the hospital by another OFW after a while of discovering him lying on the ground.
Andrade suffered from a subarachnoid hemorrhage caused by a skull fracture, and he is still in a coma as of this writing. Recently, his sister gave an update from the doctors that her brother has developed blood clots on his head. The doctors expect that he would recover after some time.
The authorities already identified persons of interest who have been called to give their statements. Meanwhile, the Philippine Embassy in Riyadh visited the victim. The Embassy promised Andrade’s family that they would update them with information about his condition including the progress of the investigation.
