A 26-year-old Filipina worker in Hong Kong dies after taking a selfie while on a hike in Tai Po waterfalls.
According to the report, the Filipina was hiking with her younger sister and four friends in Tai Mo Shan Country Park in Tai Po on Friday when the incident happened before midday.
At first, police authorities mistakenly reported that the OFW was a domestic helper. But later on, confirmed that she was actually a customer service in a call center of a financial company in Hong Kong.
Went hiking during Ching Ming Festival
In the police report, the Filipina worker and her friends went hiking during the Ching Ming Festival, starting at Lam Kam Road, Tai Po at about 9 am. However, just before they arrived at Ng Tung Chai Waterfall, her friends heard a shout and discovered that the OFW had already fallen in the water, 15 meters below them.
Slipped while taking a selfie
In addition, her friends told police authorities that the OFW was taking a selfie and slipped which caused her to fall.
The police reported that the OFW was unconscious when she was rescued out of the water. The OFW was taken to Tuen Mun Hospital by a helicopter. But sadly, she did not make it through and declared dead at 1:31 pm.
According to the rescuers’ spokeswoman, Fire Services Department of Hong Kong sent three fire engines and one ambulance. The paramedics also gave first aid to the OFW at the scene before airlifted to the hospital.
There are four levels of trails in Ng Tung Chai Waterfalls- easy, moderate, difficult and very difficult. The Ng Tung Chai Waterfall in which the OFW had fallen from is about 5 kilometers long and rated difficult.
Tai Mo Shan is Hong Kong’s highest peak and getting to the waterfalls requires a 35 meters steep hike.
