Bachelor's Degree working as domestic helper

Bachelor’s Degree Holders Opt to work as Domestic Helpers

It is sad to know that many graduates are forced to work as DHs in exchange for some few hundred dollars and homesickness.

Many Filipinos prefer to land a decent job away from home due to lesser job opportunities in the Philippines today. This is a bold reality that the Philippine government should address.

The long list of employment problems in the local scene can become a valid reason why the country continues to lose promising talents and next-generation workforce. This could also somewhat become another compelling reason why women Bachelor’s degree holders choose to work as domestic helpers.

According to Philippine Statistics Authority, the unemployment rate has gradually increased by 5.7% in the first quarter of this year from 5.4% last year. In addition, an average of 500,000 student graduates from across the country each year are creating a hostile and competitive environment in the local job market. Job trends also show that employers prefer to hire skilled workers instead of applicants with a long list of academic credentials.

With assistance from TESDA, DOLE and business organizations, the unemployment rate can be reduced and can open more opportunities for job seekers.

Job mismatch is also a key factor why graduates of nursing, political sciences and education end up working as HSW. A lot of female graduates are encouraged more to work abroad or work not related to their degree rather than staying unemployed for a long time.

Needless to say, incidents of extended working hours and underpayment happen when there is an employment mismatch. For many Filipinos, settling for a local employment consumes more time and effort than looking for a job overseas.

Job demands for household service workers significantly contribute to the interest of many graduates, particularly in the Middle East. Apart from HSW, Bachelor’s degree holders can also be hired as:

  1. service crews
  2. food attendants
  3. and low-paid administrative staffs.

Regardless if the applicant has a graduate certificate or none, he or she can be fully exposed to physical maltreatment and terrible working conditions. This is because the government employs the same application process from job posting to deployment.

The improvement of the local economy is the only solution to expand local job opportunities in the country. The more hard infrastructures the government has, the more investments may likely come in.

For this reason, economic managers, labor leaders, and business sectors must join hands together to minimize the effects of job mismatches and underemployment. Professionals and long-time OFWs can be encouraged to go back home and become the prime contributors of nationwide progress.
